Masonry work for NYC homes and buildings
Most of New York City is built from masonry. Brick row houses in the Bronx, brownstones in Brooklyn, block garages in Queens and stone-trimmed apartment buildings in Manhattan all depend on mortar, brick and stone staying tight and dry. When masonry fails, water gets in, steel rusts, and small problems become expensive ones.
Grace General Construction Corp has handled masonry for NYC property owners since 2008. We repair what can be repaired, rebuild what can’t, and match new work to the existing building so it doesn’t look patched.
What our masonry crews handle
Brick walls and facades
New brick construction, partial rebuilds, and replacement of spalled or cracked brick with a matched color and size.
Concrete block (CMU)
Block walls for garages, extensions, retaining walls and commercial back-of-house work, reinforced where the design calls for it.
Stone and limestone
Patching, dutchman repairs and replacement of sills, lintels, coping and decorative stone trim.
Chimneys
Repointing, crown rebuilds, flashing and full chimney rebuilds above the roofline.
Steel lintel replacement
Rusted lintels crack the brick above windows. We remove the masonry, replace the lintel, flash it and rebuild.
Retaining and garden walls
Leaning or bulging walls rebuilt with proper footing, drainage and weep holes.

Signs your masonry needs attention
Masonry problems usually show up on the outside long before they cause damage inside. Call us for an inspection if you notice:
- Mortar joints that are recessed, crumbling or washing out
- Stair-step cracks running through brick or block
- Bricks that are flaking, popping or spalling on the face
- Rust stains or cracks above windows and doors (a lintel problem)
- Bulging or leaning sections of wall
- Damp spots, peeling paint or efflorescence on interior walls
Catching these early usually means a repair instead of a rebuild.

Matched materials, done the right way
Good masonry repair is mostly about matching. We match brick size, color and texture, and we match the mortar to the wall. Older NYC buildings were built with softer, lime-rich mortar; patching them with hard modern mortar traps moisture and damages the brick around it. We choose the mix for your building, not the one that’s fastest to use.
Before we start, you get a written scope that lists exactly which walls, how many square feet, what gets rebuilt and what gets repointed — so the price you approve is the price you pay.

Permits, scaffolding and sidewalk protection
Many facade jobs in NYC need DOB permits, scaffolding or a sidewalk shed. We handle the filings and the equipment so you are not chasing paperwork. If your building is in a landmark district, we’ll flag it early, since work on a landmarked facade may need approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission before it can start.

Masonry questions
How much does masonry repair cost in NYC?
It depends on the size of the area, access and how much needs to be rebuilt versus repointed. Small repairs can be a few hundred to a few thousand dollars; full wall rebuilds and facade work cost more, especially if scaffolding is needed. We give a free on-site estimate with a written scope.
Can you match the color of my existing brick?
Yes. We source brick by size, color and texture to blend with your building, and we tint mortar so repairs don’t stand out.
Do I need a permit for masonry work?
Minor repairs often don’t, but larger facade work, structural rebuilds and work that needs a sidewalk shed usually do. We tell you up front and handle the filings.
What is the best time of year for masonry work?
Spring through fall is ideal because mortar cures best above freezing. We can do some winter work with protection and heat, and emergency repairs any time of year.
