What brick pointing is — and why it matters
Mortar is designed to be the sacrificial part of a brick wall. Over decades of rain, freeze-thaw cycles and sun, joints soften, crack and wash out. Once they open up, water runs straight into the wall, rusts lintels and anchors, and shows up as leaks and peeling paint inside.
Pointing (also called repointing) means removing the deteriorated mortar to a sound depth and packing in new mortar. Tuckpointing adds a fine, contrasting line on the joint for a crisp finished look — common on older NYC facades. Both protect the wall; we’ll recommend which fits your building.

Signs you need repointing
- Mortar that crumbles when you scratch it with a key
- Joints recessed more than about a quarter inch behind the brick face
- Hairline or stair-step cracks along joints
- Water stains, damp walls or efflorescence inside
- Loose bricks, especially at parapets and chimneys
How we repoint a wall
Inspect the whole elevation
We look at every side, not just the obvious spot, and note cracked brick, failed sealant and lintel issues so nothing gets missed.
Grind out joints
Old mortar is cut out to a consistent depth — typically about two to two-and-a-half times the joint width — without damaging the brick edges.
Match the mortar
We match color and strength to the existing wall. Older buildings get a softer, lime-based mix so the mortar, not your brick, takes the wear.
Pack, tool and clean
New mortar goes in layers, is tooled to match the original joint profile, and the wall is cleaned of haze when it’s done.

Often done together
Repointing is frequently paired with replacing cracked bricks, sealing window perimeters, rebuilding parapet coping or applying a breathable water repellent. If your building is subject to Local Law 11, pointing is one of the most common repairs listed on FISP reports — we can work straight from your engineer’s report.

We had a persistent leak that several contractors tried to patch, but the problem kept coming back. It was frustrating and costly. Grace General Construction Corp carefully inspected the issue and performed a proper roof repair instead of just a quick fix. They explained the problem clearly and fixed it the right way. Since then, no more leaks, even during heavy rain. Very satisfied with their honest and professional service.
We own a property with a flat roof, and pooling water was becoming a serious issue. It was starting to cause interior moisture problems. Grace General Construction Corp assessed the drainage issue and installed a proper flat roof solution to prevent standing water. The difference is incredible, no more ponding, no more stress. Their expertise and fair pricing made the whole process smooth. Highly satisfied with their roofing services.
Our shingle roof was curling and missing pieces after years of wear and tear. We were worried about wind damage and energy loss. The team at Grace General Construction Corp replaced the damaged shingles and reinforced the entire section. The workmanship was excellent, and the roof now looks brand new. I hired Grace General Construction Corp for a roofing project in Fordham, Bronx, and I’m extremely satisfied with the results. Brick Pointing & Tuckpointing questions
How long does repointing last?
Properly done with the right mortar, repointing typically lasts decades. Exposed areas like parapets and chimneys need checking more often.
Can you repoint just the bad section?
Yes. Spot pointing is common and cost-effective. We blend the new joints to the old so the repair isn’t obvious.
Is pointing the same as tuckpointing?
They are related. Pointing replaces failed mortar; tuckpointing adds a fine decorative line of contrasting mortar to make joints look crisp. Both seal the wall.
Will repointing stop my leak?
If open mortar joints are the source, yes. Leaks can also come from roofs, coping, windows or cracked brick, so we inspect the whole wall before quoting.
